Now that Samantha no longer possesses the powers of an Elemental Witch, adjusting to life as a mere mortal, married to a Drachen, is harder than any enemy she’s ever encountered. Why? Because though she’s powerless, her friends aren’t, and those powers are leading them down paths she cannot follow.

Ivan’s inability to resist the call of the Cyber Web has Dharma terrified. She’s worried about his physical health after finding him unresponsive.

Kyle’s growing power in Southern Conjure has the Witch’s Parliament worried as the only tertiary member capable of controlling and advising the young Hedge Witch is now on his own path of destruction as he searches for the Dragon’s Eye.

And to add fuel to the fire, a new enemy has discovered Sam is vulnerable and with Crwys busy investigating a mounting number of what appear to be Voodoo related murders, there is no one there to protect her…

…or the secret she’s keeping from everyone, including her husband.

Elemental Tears An Urban Fantasy Series The Eldritch Files Book 8 eBook Phaedra Weldon

This is the exact definition of a book pushed out to fulfill a quota. Where the first seven books feel like properly fleshed out novels and a full focus on the unique aspects of all the characters, this one comes off as a short story made for a collection singled out and sold off under its own title to make a contractually obligated release deadline. To make it worse, the writing loses a good 80-90% of the rich detail and personality for the story, the settings, and most notably the characters. They have the same roles and names but barely a flicker of their personality from the previous books, and the main character feels like she's suddenly been shoehorned into a secondary character role used only to further the rest of the plot for everyone else. And instead of making a cryptic or suspenseful cliffhanger, it all ends with the grandeur of a sputtering balloon deflating and leaves a dour, bland note.

This is painfully obvious as a book meant to set up the stakes for the next one but it's been done so blatantly rushed and unrefined that it comes off as a desperate sale tactic. There is little to no sign of the previous engagement of the other books and the ending is so tritely passed off as a bittersweet acknowledgement to the "way things are with the circle of life and death" that it honestly feels like a condescending middle finger to the series' readers. Followed this main character and her friends through seven escalating adventures and gotten attached to them all? See them all with next to no trace of the personality you got attached to and watch them all treat the main character like a McGuffin more than an actual character, and just as blandly disposed of at the ending with no realistic or emotional reaction whatsoever.

I am dreadfully disappointed after seeing seven excellent novels pushed out by Weldon for her to resort to such a lazy, almost uncaring move to fulfill a series quota. If you have a bigger endgame than expected, do the extra work to do it justice: don't stretch out the number of books with hastily written trope fodder and expect your readers to follow along on nothing but faith in the face of blatant disregard to their dedication to the story and characters up to that point. Literally the only thing good I can say about this work is that it holds to the same engaging writing style, but manages to make it rushed and bland on details despite that so it really isn't even a good thing. On a whole, it comes off as insulting to the story and the characters themselves and does not reflect well on Weldon as an author for choosing to press such a work as a fully fledged numbered installment of the series.

If the next book does not phenomenally make up for this misstep in every possible way, there will be no forgiving this kind of pandering laziness and I will not be following Weldon or even recommending her previous books in any manner.

Elemental Tears An Urban Fantasy Series The Eldritch Files Book 8 eBook Phaedra Weldon Reviews

Like all the books before it in the series, this was a book I couldn't put down. The main character, Samantha Holliard, is very believable even though she's a witch or at least was a witch. The unexpected twist near the end was really unexpected but the story is still going after this book. I just hope the author writes quickly!!!
I've read every book in this series and really liked the first 7. This one was a game changer. I read for pleasure -- not pain -- and I feel that I can no longer trust the author to provide that for me.
I enjoyed the other books in this series. They had nice character development and interesting relationships and interactions between those characters. I especially liked the close relationship between Sam, Kyle, and Ivan.

You will not find any of that here. There's no heart, no warmth. And the whole story feels rushed and forced.

i did not enjoy this one at all.
Alas, the book dragged. Going back and forth between character points of view got tiresome. If there is this much suffering and mis-communication in a book of this sort, then some good pay-off is expected---and this was not delivered here. SPOILER Maybe Sam is coming back as a dragon, but don't know if I'll read the next book. A waste of fabulous characters.
I still haven't stopped crying. This was one tough read. Phaedra Weldon wrote an amazing story. A real page turner involving Sam, Crwys and their friends trying to stop a VooDoo killer. Throughout the story you hoped the God Mother would make things right even up to the end. Crwys, Tas, Levi and Arden, Bastien and the Aces and so many others trying to save Ivan from a coma brought about by the VooDoo killer and Sam who's life was changed in a matter of days bringing about a shocking ending to the story. Happiness turning to heartache and then to despair. Can't wait to see what Phaedra has in store for her next book in the series! - Kathy Barber Doyle - 6/13/2017
But I read your blurb about the 9th book, and your request that we hold off our anger and I forgave you. Had you ended the series with Elemental Tears I would have been furious. There is nothing I hate more than unnecessary endings set to break the heart. And had it ended there, I would definitely have found it unnecessary. But it didn't end there. So I find myself compelled to be honest and give it a 5 because all else aside, her writing is exemplary. As always she dragged laughter and tears from me like very few can. Kudos Phaedra Weldon! You blew me away once again. Now just don't leave me disappointed with the ending and all will be good.
Other reviewers have mentioned the horrible ending and I must agree that it was a game changer for me. I read for entertainment and don't want to feel sad at the end of books I read. I don't see how it can plausibly get better after this, so I am done with this series and will probably not read anything by this author again. Aside from the ending though, this book was a painful read for a number of reasons, which is why I gave it two stars. It sucked to watch the strong heroine I loved basically become a victim throughout the whole book. The other characters in the book are boring compared to Sam; it was not as compelling since she's kept out of the action and out of the loop for most of the book. I kept hoping things would turn around. The constant miscommunication or lack of communication between characters got old really fast, and I felt like I saw events unfolding predictably and disastrously. How could they not see it? Some character actions also did not make sense to me. I dont think Crws, or any normal person for the matter, would leave his wife when she's about to go into surgery. The book gets two stars instead of one because it was still fast paced and hard to put down. Still Very disappointing.
